How should I put this… I live in Malaysia, a multicultural country so in the very least, everyone knows their English and Malay or they would be in serious trouble when it comes to their education.
It’s like you in Hong Kong knowing at least Cantonese and Mandarin or Chinese, right?
And then since I’m a Chinese, I would at least know Chinese.
And since I aspire to study at Japan, I picked up Japanese.
The area I live in have a lot of Cantonese speakers along and my grandmother’s area have a lot of Hokkien speakers. I also have interest in several languages as well. I have a bigger interest in dialects than languages though. I’m a sucker for languages.
My interests right now is Japanese, Korean, English and Latin.
So… not to brag or anything… here’s what I know
Able to write, speak and read:
- English language - studied at school
- Bahasa Melayu (Malay) - studied at school
- 华语 (Chinese) - studied at school, Taiwanese Chinese is self taught
- 日本語 (Japanese) - classes and self studying
Able to speak, read a little, write a little:
- 廣東話 (Cantonese) - learned from environment
- 福建話 (Hokkien) - taught by parents, family language
- 한국어 (Korean) - self study, bad at grammar and complex letters
- Singaporean English - cause it’s so different than normal English
- Malaysia English - cause it’s so different than normal English
Know very small portions of:
(the small portion is only certain phrases and greetings and I know so little that it might as well be zero)
- Latin - self-study
- Italiano (Italian) - I have a friend who teaches me that at times
- русский язык (Russian) - just the letters though… can you believe their p is r?
- Tiếng Việt (Vietnamese) - just some phrases, they are similar to Chinese
